TTS Speaker Series Presents: “Food, Justice, and Sustainability” with author/activist/chef Bryant Terry.
In recent years, Oakland, CA has emerged as one of the centers of the “food justice” movement, a grassroots effort to increase health in urban communities through sustainable, community gardens and independent grocery stores which stock locally-grown produce. Diet has also played a major role in the food justice movement – specifically the awareness of unhealthy eating trends such as fast-food restaurants—which can lead to diabetes and/or heart problems--and the emergence of healthier alternatives.
Memphis-raised, Oakland-based author/activist/chef Bryant Terry has become a nationally-recognized leader in food justice’s literary scene with the publication of “Grub: Ideas for an Urban Organic Kitchen,” and its groundbreaking follow-up, “Vegan Soul Kitchen.” Terry’s new book, “The Inspired Vegan,” picks up where the two previous volumes left off: with more menus, recipes, and ideas for creative, mouth-watering food choices which not only look and taste great, but are 100% Vegan.

TTS is proud to kick off its 2012 Speaker Series with “Food, Justice, and Sustainability,” an official book release event for “The Inspired Vegan.” The evening features an informative panel discussion with Terry; Brahm Ahmadi, CEO of People’s Community Market; author/academic Amie Breeze Harper (editor, “Sistah Vegan”); author/ activist/academic Raj Patel (“Stuffed and Starved”; “The Value of Nothing”); and moderator Nikki Henderson, Executive Director of People’s Grocery.
TTS Presents: “Food, Justice, and Sustainability,” a panel discussion with Bryant Terry, Brahm Ahmadi, Amie Breeze Harper, and Raj Patel, moderated by Nikki Henderson and hosted by Ashara Ekundayo. Book release party for “The Inspired Vegan.”
*Expect a wide-ranging, engaging conversation on everything from mass consumption, to the impact of globalization on health, to choosing a sustainable, healthy diet, to the role food plays in cultural and social identity. Following the panel, the floor will be opened up to the audience, who are invited to join the conversation and share their stories. Additionally, recipes from and inspired by “The Inspired Vegan” will be cooked up by Hibiscus Restaurant.
